An initiative supported by medical experts is calling for an immediate moratorium on mRNA vaccines. It points to an outstanding risk-benefit assessment and possible long-term consequences. Reliable studies are therefore lacking.

The "Human Science and Medicine" (MWM) initiative is calling for an immediate moratorium on mRNA vaccines. In its view, key questions regarding risks and efficacy have not yet been sufficiently clarified. It is calling for a comprehensive review and more transparency. In an interview with Cicero, doctors Matthias Schrappe and Erich Freisleben, who support the initiative, explain their motives.

The core demands of the initiative are formulated in a 14-point manifesto. At the center is the question of whether possible side effects outweigh the benefits of such a vaccination. The medical experts point to what they see as the exceptionally fast approval process: what would otherwise take many years to develop and test was launched on the market in a short space of time during coronavirus - with correspondingly high risks.

The role of the spike protein formed after vaccination is particularly controversial for the initiative: where it is distributed in the body, how long it stays there and what effect it has there has not yet been convincingly clarified. In this context, the cardinal error from the outset was that no effort was ever made to systematically record possible side effects.

"Instead, a climate prevailed in which reports of side effects were downright undesirable," says Schrappe. This contributed to an extremely superficial recording of possible risks. Freisleben is similarly critical of the procedure: "In a country as highly developed as ours, it's hard to believe how this happened." Precisely because of the novelty of the vaccine, she believes it would have been necessary to document it particularly carefully and meticulously.

For a reliable cost-benefit assessment, the two believe it would have been crucial to systematically record post-Covid and post-vac cases - which are sometimes very similar in terms of symptoms - and compare their frequency. According to Schrappe, there were obvious study designs for this: "You simply had to look at 10,000 vaccinated people and 10,000 non-vaccinated people six months or a year after the vaccination."

This would have made it possible to detect unexpected effects, such as neurological symptoms that did not become noticeable immediately, but only after a time lag. Freisleben also reports that he has experienced a noticeable increase in post-Vac cases compared to post-Covid cases in his own patient base.

In chronic courses of post-Vac or post-Covid symptoms, spike proteins are often still detectable. These can be examined using methods such as mass spectrometry to determine whether they originate from an infection or were caused by the vaccination. "If 90 percent of the suspected post-Covid cases were actually post-vac cases, which I don't rule out, a completely new picture would emerge," he says.

In addition, according to the initiative, control studies could be set up with health insurance data - for example, to compare how frequently pulmonary embolisms, strokes or thromboses occur in different groups. "The scandal is that these and similar studies are not being carried out, even though it is absolutely clear that the elephant is in the room when it comes to the question of side effects," says Schrappe.
